Today’s Info 13th December 2014 – Update

Well we were rewarded with Benbane Head yesterday who has been subject of this column a few times but hadn’t copped the breaks needed to get his head in front. He was majestic from the front yesterday under a super ride and whilst I was worried for a spell in the straight that he might still whack a fence out of the ground he didn’t and he attacked pretty much all of them in the style of a very happy animal.

It continues at Cheltenham of course and the newly named December Gold cup is sadly not a bigger field but the quality is in there especially with a very likely winner at the top of the market in the PP Gold Cup winner Caid Du Berlais. He deserved a bit more of a hike for his win last month and could be let in lightly to back it up here but I’m not convinced he can pull it off and certainly less so when you consider his likely starting price here.

The two sexy types other than the fav are No Buts and Barrakilla, the latter has to be preferred of the two in terms of the conditions of this race given the form with the former and the weights carried this afternoon but it’s perhaps not as straightforward.  There was a lot to like about No Buts winning next time up and a good hike was deserved whilst you are backing Barrakilla to step forward on what looks like is there rather than has been shown. If there is an ace up someone sleeves in terms of handicap mark it is Barrakilla you’d have to say.

I’d be able to make a case for most of this field with varying levels of forgiveness and so price is all important. I’m giving Easter Meteor another nod for new connections especially at the odds having expected better in the PP Gold Cup and for a while in that race I was happy with him. He eventually pulled up but he can go very well here if that was needed and the experience not lost on him, they have a horse with an engine and I think a little more improvement to be eeked out if he is on good terms with himself for a second run. I wouldn’t put people off Darna running a big race, mark has shot up for winning a bad race I suspect but he has the scope and the ability to figure for a trainer that deserves to get him right, he is a class horse and could be set for a big season. He is the second wager in the race with AP no bad booking.

I will add to this in the morning before racing get’s underway with some more thoughts on the afternoon.

Update –

I’m not sure Parsnip Pete is priced up right in a tricky 1.25pm at Cheltenham. Nice animal who is paying a little for success in the handicap but can prove tough enough to get involved. I’d have preferred more runners for an each way play but he is still worth a small bet to go well.

I think it will be a good day for the fav’s at the track too with Blacklion, who was a little mugged last time and should resume progress whilst The New One along with Rock On Ruby having straightforward assignments. I’ve a small wager on the three obliging but it’s not rocket science to suggest these and if they don’t win I’ll be surprised.

Advice –

Cheltenham 1.25 – Parsnip Pete 0.5pt Win – 20/1 General

Cheltenham 2.00pm –

Easter Meteor 0.75pt Win – 16/1 General

Darna 0.75pt Win – 12/1 General

0.25pt Fav Treble – 2.35 Blacklion 2/1, 3.10 The New One 4/7 and 3.45 Rock On Ruby 13/8
