Today’s Info 15th May 2014

Good morning.

Another second for the column this month with Astaire, it was a very good run but Maarek was superb under a penalty and the class came to the front in the race. Clever Cookie was too good for Awake My Soul but we collect each way and with the other selection a non runner that was that.

Dante today and True Story will presumably justify the odds on to get the better of Bunker but it’s only a watching race for me, I do think that the Godolphin horse is the right one for the Derby but he’d want to get this done the right way to make any dents to the 6s for that. Let’s see……

In the Middleton I do want to side with a lady who didn’t quite get what was deserved last season and that is Secret Gesture. She could and should have picked up two Group 1’s but can make amends this term as she always struck me as having more to come physically and a touch weak despite her excellent form at three. I don’t think she has too much to find with the more experienced Thistle Bird and Ambivalent who set the bar in the race, she should go past them this season and her trainer will be itching to get her flying early.

Fury has come down to a super mark to bid for a repeat victory in the Hambelton at 3.15pm The Haggas horse won it two years ago but spent last year finding all sorts of ways to stay out of the winners enclosure by racing wide, being the wrong side, dwindling at the start and generally being a bit of a monkey. Ryan Moore takes the reigns and conditions look ideal, if he is able to run his usual race then he has to be involved.

I’m taking a punt at a rag in the 2m Handicap with Herostatus who was dire last time out but encouraged on his reappearance at Thirsk previous to that. He does go well here and the run last time at Ripon was a write off, in fact he doesn’t act on tracks like that, with pretty much all previously similar awful efforts coming at right hooking tracks and all of his career wins coming on the left handed venues. Off his mark and with Joey Haynes reducing it further he looks well treated for a return to form, it seems easy to excuse the below par effort but the layers have taken it somewhat at face value. I expect him to out run the rag odds at the least and with a bit of luck he could be a player here.

At Newmarket you won’t find a more unlucky loser last time out than Quest For More who goes at 7pm. A cracking type but off the back of the massacre received in running last time then the layers are taking no chances in this better race at 3/1 or so -I think he will win but prepared to watch rather than punt at those odds and will see what the market does in the evening.

Advice –

York 2.15 – Secret Gesture 0.75pt Win – 4/1 Victor and Stan J, 9/2 with Coral and 7/2 General

York 3.15 – Fury 1pt Win – 6/1 with most firms

York 5.00 – Herostatus 0.75pt e/w – 50/1 Ladbrokes, Stan J, Bet365 and Skybet, 4 places and 1/4 odds
