Today’s Info 2nd May 2015
It’s a proper mix of top class action today with the Guineas meeting at Newmarket and the action at Punchestown bar Annie Power a very competive swansong over the jumps.
The market relaxing of Gleneagles is a concern perhaps but the form stand out and the most impressive colt from last year should be winning under Ryan Moore. Two Group 1’s in the bag, impressive in France despite being harshly disqualified I am surpised that the price is as big as available this morning. Holds a verdict over the French raider, Estidhkhaar looked ready for the step up on return but that result whilst guaranteeing fitness didn’t scream winner of a Guineas to me and then Ol Man River will perhaps find this the very minimum of his ideal trip this term.
Intilaaq ran away with a maiden and looks a lovely type who steps up now and is respected on what little we have seen whilst Ivawood was flat on return and needs to show a lot more now so that cv looks a little shy now for this test. Then we reach the bigger outsiders and they clearly have more to find but that is not impossible, Bossy Guest is a horse I like a lot and they are tilting here with him after looking a shell last year and clearly having trained on nicely, he can run better than rag odds but still should be held.
Glenaeagles, a proven and exciting Group 1 performer already is the one they have to beat and I expected him to be a shorter price so with a bit of luck in running, probably needed in the big field, is the call at the odds.
With the ground drying at Goodwood then Jordan Princess for Cumani holds plenty of appeal on return in the Listed contest at 2.15pm. She is good fresh and has the best form on offer proving progressive last year and acts well here so rightly favourite. I expect she will step up a good bit more this season and with conditions ideal first time back I’m happy to play the prices on offer.
At Punchestown I am a big fan of Sizing Coal who outran his odds in the Irish National and can go well again here in an open marathon handicap chase this afternoon at 3.10pm. Faces the winner from Fairyhouse but has a lovely weight here, better ground hopefully although the rain is pouring and was actually not the luckiest in running last time so I expect further improvement again if given a clear spin by JJ Burke.
Gallant Oscar is no great price but has to be hard to beat in the 5.00pm contest for Tony Martin and Mark Walsh. Ran well in the Thyestes but stepped up again at Cheltenham and derserves a decent handicap to drop his way here. At better prices I am also going to chance a small wager on Ballyculla who ran much better than it looked at rag prices behind Cause Of Causes at Cheltenham when we were on and looks ideal for this test. Gavin Sheehan is back on and is certainly capable of figuring at a big price.
Having been with The Saint James at Cheltenham and then more so at Aintree when very unlucky not to be a ready winner it would be horrid to desert him today for the 5.35pm and Slippers Madden takes over for the ride which is nice plus on a horse that needs a steady hand. Out of the ground too far at the Festival and then all sorts of trouble at Aintree he has very solid claims here and is probably a few pounds still ahead of his mark. Goes on any ground and hopefully can sit handy in a big field.
Have a great day and good luck to all.
