Today’s Info 6th June 2015 – Derby Day, Epsom

Got the day handed to me yesterday in no uncertain terms, nothing went to plan and that can happen in this sport. For whatever reason and there were a few including my own bad judgement it was a poor day! I felt like we left a couple of winners behind, in the opener and also the Oaks but would have been better finding the winners rather than the losers, unlucky or not.

It’s been about Elm Park for me in the Derby for some time, I was not disappointed with the Dante run although I did feel that he perhaps didn’t oooze star quality which would have been nice to see. A couple of race fit animals who were at their optimum managed to beat him but there was a moment when you felt Elm Park had them well beaten until fitness quite rightly kicked in and Balding’s charge had to be left alone for the big day. A shower or two would have kept the others even more doubtful of lasting home but Elm Park looks the right ticket regardless.

I think he will reverse Dante form now with this test in front of him and he is still the wrong price to do so. Aidan O’Brien showed us yesterday that any runner he sends deserves consideration but he has struggled to get his team in order and it’s hard to go with one from his yard this time around. Epicuris is a fascinating runner and is tempting as a second dart but there is a big feel of last minute wonders in this line up and I continue to come back to Elm Park, right day, right race and prep completed.

In the dash I’ve a small wager on Steps who really deserves to land one of these, ran well in it last year but met all sorts of problems as is his nature given the tactics needed – he will rattle up the last 100 yards or so and can nod on the line this time!

Over the jumps at Worcester there has to be a chance that Wings Of Smoke will put it all in for Richard Johnson in a very winnable handicap chase where he has ideal conditions. Dropped in trip after a spin at Kempton, was running better at Aintree than the figures will show you and this is the right grade, he can go well and is overpriced to do so.

Best of luck to all and hopefully the Derby is a cracker.
