Today’s Info – Grand National Aintree 11th April 2015

Good evening to all. – UPDATED BELOW!

A look at the Grand National before tomorrow and the rest of the card to be reviewed before racing gets underway at Aintree on Saturday so check back then.

It’s become a more classy and more straightforward affair of late with the changes to the race making it faster and easier to negotiate allowing bigger weights to be carried and better animals to run well without worrying as much about a plodder off little or no weight grinding them down over the marathon trip – hasn’t it?

It has to a degree but as we saw today with the Topham there can still be the lottery element as horses get loose and fallers make getting around the first job to be done and then if there with a chance at the end hope you have enough left to make it to the line.

Balthazar King might have won last year but for leaving a little of his freshness at Cheltenham in the X Country, a mark that will not be left this year and fresh, fancied and getting ideal conditions put the Hobb’s charge at the top of the list for many. He is not getting younger but finishes his career much better than it started and it could be third time lucky for him this year. Jumps, stays and negotiates big fields well, can wear the I’ve done it before T shirt and is a fair price off just a few pounds higher to go one place better.

Saint Are loves Aintree and will have delighted connections this year with a big run at the track in the bank and a win to ensure they get in and off a light weight and with conditions set to suit well he looks over priced under Paddy Brennan. Ran in Aurora’s Encores race but looks a different proposition now and if hanging in there mid way, as they are bound to go quick up front, will be a big player with a kick start finish from the last.

First Lieutenant would be a huge runner if you knew he was back to himself under Nina Carberry and Mouse Morris has been in good form of late as the spring has rolled in but it’s a hard one to call. Can jump great but just hasn’t been seen to his best for a year now and whilst this may have been the plan for a while it’s a small bet rather than a confident one but it would be some story and Nina has the right horse to figure if she gets him happy and racing.

AP has the favourite and probably only the price would put you off and he is sure to be well backed as the once a year punters steam in, Shutthefrontdoor would be a great story and if he wins I’ll cheer with the rest but of the market leaders I prefer Balthazar King who is the bigger price of course.

We’ll look at the race again tomorrow and the rest of the card…

Update – 11.45am

Cracking card at Aintree besides the National and Nichols Canyon looks a strong fav in the operner. We were on at Cheltenham and I think this will suit better than there and he should get the afternoon off to a flyer for punters and Ruby Walsh. Strong form all year and clear pick for me I hope he is given plenty of positivity from the front end and 7/2 is fair.

Hard to oppose Gods Own up next but at the prices I’m happy to watch him run well again and the Cheltenham effort was huge behind UDS and a repeat will account for his rivals today but backing it up is the worry so passed over.

Zarkandar was the unlucky horse in the World Hurdle and should get revenge today at Aintree over Cole Harden and is borderline value at 5/2, it was a race stopping mistake at Cheltenham and without that I think he will win today. The market tells you all you need to know and can crown a good season for him and the trainer of course.

Edgardo Sol is well treated for the next and their are questions over many in the race so I’m happy to punt him at what is a retracting value price. Buywise continues to run well and a clear round makes him a danger but Emma Lavelle’s runner is good here and has been threatening to win a nice pot, hopefully this afternoon as we have been on side a couple of times without getting much luck.

Two darts at the 5.10 and the main pick is Baltimore Rock who I thought ran a huge race at Cheltenham and goes well here. Potentially laid out to figure at this meeting this year and best form entitles him to win and a good pilot booked he has to be on side and hopefully returns a few quid with a big run. The other is The Game Changer and getting the broken record out again he is a super type who we have followed with success in the past, Luke Dempsey is a super booking and Gordon Elliott will have him spot on again, market agrees and he should run well.

Good luck to you all!!
