Trip To Paris claims the Chester Cup

Ed Dunlop, Graham Lee and Trip To Paris proved too strong in the finish at Chester this afternoon to land the Chester Cup from Irish raiders Quick Jack and Zafayan with Gabrial’s King back in fourth place on the Roodee.

It was a run down the outside from a long way back under a very strong Graham Lee ride that saw Trip To Paris 10/1, last home the best and swoop to a 3/4 length success with Quick Jack denied for Tony Martin and Richard Hughes but running out a gallant second sent off the 4/1f.

Winning trainer Ed Dunlop drew comparison to his veteran star Red Cadeaux following the victory and mentioned that the Northumberland Plate, Ascot Gold Cup and even Melbourne could be on the agenda now. He was delighted with the improvement shown at the trip and since being gelded last term. Dunlop “He’s got to rise in the weights to get into the Melbourne Cup this year. Maybe we’ll take two (Trip To Paris and Red Cadeaux) to halve the expense!”.

Earlier in the day the Cheshire Oaks was won in stylish fashion by Diamondsandrubies for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore finishing with a strong turn off foot and easily accounting for her rivals. The bookmakers reacted quickly by cutting her odds for the Epsom Investec Oaks in from  25/1 to a general 10/1 for the fillies showpiece in June.

Coolmore rep Kevin Buckley reported afterwards. “Ryan Moore said she gave him a really good feel – she missed the break a little, but settled well and when he pressed the button she really responded well. The Oaks is the likely target and she is right in that picture.”
