True Story primed to bounce back in Rose Of Lancaster

It’s five years since a 3-year-old last won this race but I’m hoping that can change with True Story, who needs to bounce back to his best in order to break the trend. The Godolphin colt looked like a possible top-notch talent when running away with a Newmarket Listed race on his return and although that form wasn’t mind-blowing, he won by an easy 7-lengths despite doing plenty wrong.

That led to Saeed bin Suroor’s charge going off as the 8/13 favourite for the Group 2 Dante at York four weeks later and despite finishing in a relatively disappointing third place, the form looks sound enough given what winner The Grey Gatsby and runner-up Arod have done since.

True Story was a non-stayer in the Epsom Derby when slightly further behind Arod and didn’t handle the track, but he also came out of stall 1 and that was completely detrimental as it has a record of 0-97 in fields with ten or more (stall 2 is 2-97). All in all, there’s enough there to suggest that he couldn’t run to his real level of ability and that he’s better than the run shows.

In a first-time visor, when contesting the Group 1 Eclipse over 1m 2f at Sandown, I thought that he shaped a lot better in what was a farcical race (Somewhat finishing third says it all). A four-length, fifth place finish was all he could muster in the end but it was an encouragement nonetheless and can be built upon. For one, this is a much easier race as he’s down into a Group 3, plus it’s also being run on a more conventional track. I think that’ll suit the colt and barring lots of rain, the ground should be fine. His biggest danger is Hillstar on all known form but Sir Michael Stoute’s charge drops back to this trip from 1m 4f and I can’t see that suiting, whilst he would prefer genuinely quick underfoot conditions. Vancouverite, who also represents Godolphin, is another likely type but his last time out form will have to be improved upon (possible he’ll come on for the run) and connections hold a much better chance with True Story, in my opinion. 4/1 about him is fair enough and he should go well.

Selection for the Rose Of Lancaster (2:55 Haydock; Saturday, 9th August):

Godolphin Silks True Story – 4/1, available with Hills & StanJames.
