Watch out for Night’s at Southwell

3.50 SOUTHWELL: LADBROKES MOBILE HANDICAP (1M)

It is slim pickings around the tracks today, including here at Southwell where a seven race card is up for decision. The finale on the card is this one mile handicap where a total of ten will face the starter.

Recent course and distance winner Eium Mac currently heads the market and rightly so in a race that is devoid of any real form. That was the now 6yo’s first victory in fourteen starts having dropped to a mark of 45 and a 6lb penalty here may be enough to stop Neville Bycroft’s charge from doubling up.

The veteran General Tufto was just over a length behind that one last time and the 10yo, a nine time course and distance winner, finds himself 3lbs better off today. He could well be able to reverse that form and may well prove the one to beat for Charles Smith and Joey Haynes.

Habeshia recorded an all-weather double back in November but has been well beaten in two starts since while Irish raider Randall’s Allanah must overcome a long absence and both can probably be ignored. It may be worth having an eachway crack at an outsider in here and I am willing to that with Dai Burchell’s Night’s Watch.

Granted it is a leap of faith to have any kind of money on a horse with such minimal form but the 5yo has dropped to a career low mark of 52 which allows him to sneak into this contest. He came to form at this time last year and was actually a winner off of 2lbs higher at Lingfield.

He may be slightly overpriced in such a weak contest at 14/1 despite having to give weight away to most.
