Wicklow Brave cruises to County Hurdle success
Wicklow Brave continued the Willie Mullins juggernaut with an effortless victory in the County Hurdle under Paul Townend. The 6yo had blown his chances in his last two starts by being left at the start, including at the weekend in the Imperial Cup at Sandown. Mullins’ charge had racked up a five timer at the end of last season and ran a big race in the Supreme Novices at the Festival last year.
This season had been very disappointing but his canny trainer, who was recording his seventh victory of the week, was always confident that there was a big race in him and a mark of 138 proved to be generous as he scooted clear to win with ease under a confident Townend.
Having been held up off the pace, Townend was forced to come wide on the turn in but he was always travelling better than the rest and despite making a mess of the last, came home 8 lengths to the good. Sort It Out finished back in second, with Quick Jack and Max Dynamite filling the places.
A delighted Townend, recording his third win of the week said: “I always kept a bit of faith in this horse because he has loads of ability. Things didn’t go right at the start for him the last two days but don’t forget twelve months ago he ran a cracker in the Supreme Novices. He ran a few bad races after that and seemed to be forgotten about.”
