Winx lands Cox Plate
No joy for European raiders in Australia although Highland Reel ran into third place behind winner Winx in the William Hill Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
Aidan O’Brien will have hoped to land the race again as he did with Adelaide last year but an impressive performance from Winx for trainer Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman proved too much for rivals. Arod for Peter Chapple-Hyam was prominent for a long way in contest but ultimately faded away to finish behind the main pack.
Winx swooped into an unassailable lead at the start of the run for home and quickly asserted for a prestigeous win for connections with Criterion in second and Highland Reel a credible third under Ryan Moore.
Bowman said afterwards “To be here, riding on this stage, is one thing, but to win the race, I can’t tell you how much it means. I drew barrier one and I had a lot of confidence in the filly. She adapted to the awkward position, but sometimes you have to take the cards you are dealt.”
“It’s a very humbling feeling. I’m very privileged and very proud. It’s been a wonderful ride and it’s not over yet.”
