Youth prevails in the Sapphire
Fountain Of Youth caused a major upset in the Group 3 Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh, with Aidan O’Brien’s charge showing plenty of toughness to come home a game winner by just a head. The Oasis Dream colt had put in a very disappointing effort in the 2000 Guineas two starts ago but was a different horse today in first time blinkers, giving Seamie Heffernan a much deserved victory.
Sent of the complete outsider of the field at 14/1, Heffernan was happy to play the waiting game with his mount, eventually making a move after the 2 pole before staying on gamely in the closing stages to get the better of 2/1 favourite Extortionist on the line. Monsieur Joe, under Joseph O’Brien, came home in third.
O’Brien Snr said: “I was running him over the wrong distances obviously when we were trying to get a mile with him. We tried to make him get a mile on heavy ground and that was probably like running over a mile and a quarter so it was a big disadvantage what we were trying to do.
“We’ll keep him to five or six (furlongs) now and he’s in all the big sprints.”
