Zawraq “surprised if he doesn’t stay” Angus Gold
Hamdam Al Maktoum’s racing manager Angus Gold was reported by the Racing Post today on the further developments in Zawraq’s preparation for Epsom’s Investec Derby. In the update was news of the latest homework the colt has completed for Dermot Weld and jockey Pat Smullen, which has the camp confident as the Classic draws ever closer.
Gold revealed to the RP “I spoke to the trainer and the jockey this morning after they did a bit of work with him and they were happy.”
“They worked him a mile and a quarter this morning and said he was doing his best work at the end, which has led both of them to feel much more confident he will stay.”
“I will be surprised if he doesn’t stay. He had a half-brother by Green Desert that won over a mile and a quarter, and the dam was a sister to Mawatheeq, who was by Danzig and he won over a mile and a half, so that female family seems to be fairly strong on the stamina front, and I’d be surprised if he didn’t.”
“We’re going in there not really knowing how good this horse is. We don’t know a lot about him other than he’s potentially a nice horse. He’s a horse with a good temperament so if he settles I think he will be there or thereabouts. Whether he’s good enough; only the day will tell us.”
Betting for the showpiece remains full of question marks as to the line up and of course conditions on the day but currently best prices available read as follows – Golden Horn (15/8), Gleneagles (4), Zawraq (5), Jack Hobbs (7), Elm Park (8), Hans Holbein (12), Found (16), Giovanni Canaletto (20), Kilimanjaro (20), Epicuris (25), Success Days (25) Bar….
